Understanding the Immune System

The immune system is the body’s natural defence network made up of white blood cells, antibodies, lymph nodes, bone marrow, and the spleen. Together, they detect and destroy harmful germs such as bacteria, viruses, fungi, and parasites.
When a germ enters the body, the immune system identifies it as foreign and attacks it. Once the infection is cleared, the immune cells “remember” the germ, allowing the body to respond faster if exposed again. This memory forms the basis of immunity, whether from natural infection or vaccination.
Besides preventing diseases, vaccines complement other global health tools such as antibiotics and breastfeeding. They are safe, effective, and protect individuals, families, and communities. Childhood immunisation is estimated to save between 2 to 3 million lives worldwide every year.
